Goal setting is a terrific tool to help you achieve success in every area of your life. Goals that are set without establishing an emotional attachment to them is like putting a boat into water without a rudder. A boat missing its rudder is usually adrift on the sea without direction; a goal without the stabilizing backbone of intention is no different. Emotion is a guiding force in goal setting and it is also the glue that connects an individual to their vision. It is not enough to logically pursue a goal; you must learn to become one with it through the power of your thoughts, feelings and actions.
Goal setting requires accountability through specific tasks that are realistically approached and can ultimately be measured at some agreed upon date in the future. Goals represent values and values are at their core part of your belief system. Prior to undertaking any goal, it is important to thoroughly evaluate whether it really is a goal or rather is a “should be.” A “should be” is any goal that you “should be” doing or one that “should be” a real priority in your life. “Should bes”, “ought to bes” are goals that sound good to say or look good on paper but do not stir you the point of yelling out a firm “hell yeah, that’s my goal”. So you say, well then, it just “might be” worth taking the time to explore your values before announcing your new goal to the world? The Life Coach Online can say without hesitation that there are no “might bes about it”!
So then, you may wisely ask, “what is it that I will be exploring in all that time leading up to the moment that the goal is officially set?” One place to start would be in writing down “value statements”. “Value Statements” are the standard operating principles that direct your life’s actions and inactions. For example, “I really should weigh ten pounds less than I currently do” has a different emotional resonance than “I am committed to losing ten pounds in the next three months and these are the steps that I will take to ensure that this goal is reached.”
If you write down your value statements, you will hopefully uncover the intention behind the statement. If it is a statement that exists extemporaneously or without real thought having been given to it at all, you may actually determine that is a false “value” clouded into your SOP. A false value would be one that is attached to a cycle of guilt, fear, worry supported by emotional and physical inactivity to making it a goal. If it is not a goal, it needs to be soothed into a place of acceptance; however, if it is a goal, it needs to become emotionally attached to setting a plan of action. It is usually helpful if you can prioritize the true values and eliminate the false ones and then pick the one that would bring you a measurable sense of accomplishment in the least amount of time.
Once you know that you can achieve your goals and will take the time to bask in or celebrate these small or large victories, goal setting becomes a tool of practicality. The emotional energy that is spent ruminating over false values usually takes more energy than the steps to realizing true goals and values. You will also come to appreciate that the inspired action that is carrying you along the path to completing that goal is very satisfying. Inspired action does not seem to use as much physical energy because it is moving with the flow rather than against it. Inspired action fuels the momentum of achievement and carries you forward whereas languishing in periods of self doubt or inactivity will take you in the opposite direction.
How about deciding today to write down the SOPs that are the most prevalent in your life? Recognize the core value statements that resonate within you as “true” and those that are “false.” Discover the ones that are really “should bes” and “ought to bes” and either strengthen them or accept that you really are not interested in keeping them as SOPs at the moment. For those core values that stir you to action, develop a specific plan that you can realistically move toward completing and even go so far as to assign a date to it. Take time to observe all of your accomplishments along the way, no matter how small, and make them into reasons to celebrate. You are on a journey of emotions and the faster that you align with the emotions and values that are part of your core being, you will have a tremendously satisfying ride.
