Goal setting is a terrific tool to help you achieve success in every area of your life. Goals that are set without establishing an emotional attachment to them is like putting a boat into water without a rudder. A boat missing its rudder is usually adrift on the sea without direction; a goal without the stabilizing backbone of intention is no different. Emotion is a guiding force in goal setting and it is also the glue that connects an individual to their vision. It is not enough to logically pursue a goal; you must learn to become one with it through the power of your thoughts, feelings and actions.
Goal setting requires accountability through specific tasks that are realistically approached and can ultimately be measured at some agreed upon date in the future. Goals represent values which are at the core of your belief system. Prior to undertaking any goal, it is important to thoroughly evaluate whether it really is a goal or if it is merely a “should be.” A “should be” is any goal that you “should be” doing or one that “should be” a real priority in your life. “Should bes” and “ought to bes” are the kinds of goals that feel good to say or look good on paper but do not stir you to the point of yelling out a firm “hell yeah, that’s my goal”.
Prior to undertaking any type of challenge, it is worth spending some time exploring your values and beliefs to discover if you are really emotionally committed to the goal. “Hell yeahs” are like the eggs, flour, water and milk of most baking recipes; they are essential to the cooking process. “Should bes” and “might bes” are similar to making a decision to add a little more salt to the batter; it’s probably fine either way but is unlikely to make or break the batch. “Hell yeahs” are essential to sustaining a goal at peak performance because, like with baking, there are unforeseen conditions that may effect the production. For instance, bakers will tell you that there are physio-chemical changes that can take place to certain breads when there are atmospheric changes in pressure and humidity. Imagine creating the batter for a perfect batch of biscuits but they would have had a better time rising in another city with more favorable weather conditions? Try planning for that kind of situation on a daily basis!
Like a baker, the goal setter must recognize that there will be moments when the best laid plans fall away to circumstances that are beyond his or her control. These split second flashes of panic may be the catalyst which causes the “should bes” and “might bes” to surface. It can be a double shocker to the unprepared goal setter if this is the first time that these underlying “demons” are being confronted. Think of these “demons” as anything that erupts to create a condition of discomfort on an otherwise smooth trail. For a baker who is unaware that the humidity was about to rise may feel entirely crestfallen when the loaves of bread don’t. The goal setter, who prior to the bump in the road was making great strides, may take ten or twenty steps backwards in defeat. In both cases, if the individuals regain their focus towards the “hell yeah, the down time will be minimal.
Not all “should bes” and “might bes” are going to reveal themselves prior to embarking on your goal setting journey even if you do the uncovering work beforehand. The simple fact that you feel a passionate pulling towards your goal embodied in that resolute “hell yeah” is enough to get you moving towards it. It is recommended that you examine the depth of the commitment to that goal only in that you do not make a false assumption to grab a hold of someone else’s goal. In situations like that, when your values actually belong to the belief system or goals of someone else, it may dampen your spirits when the “demon” races you to the finish line. The challenge in goal setting is between you and you; no one else. The “hell yeah” is the broader, wiser part of your being and the aspect of you that is directly connected with the Universal Will. The “hell yeah” works in sympatico with your physical body to energize and replenish the Will during moments of trial and consternation.
